World Events

A leaked Pentagon report warns Bush that global climate change is real, coming soon, and will destroy the world with war, privation and massive upheaval:

A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a ‘Siberian’ climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world.

The document predicts that abrupt climate change could bring the planet to the edge of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and secure dwindling food, water and energy supplies. The threat to global stability vastly eclipses that of terrorism, say the few experts privy to its contents.

‘Disruption and conflict will be endemic features of life,’ concludes the Pentagon analysis. ‘Once again, warfare would define human life.’

No worries! The US government is on the job!

Here is an excellent video that demonstrates the extent of the worldwide protests against Scientology that took place on February 10th, 2008.

There are two points I would like to make:
1) Most people think Scientology is just a wacky religion. All it takes is a google search and you’ll learn otherwise.
2) One can take a look at the events of the past few weeks and see it as a bunch of “misguided young people” not knowing what to do with their free time. Or one could see it as the beginning of something epic.

And now, the latest from Anonymous:

Note: I know nothing about Anonymous, but I’m interested in this from a media theorist’s perspective. However, I do think Dave is a member of the group.

A friend of mine went to the Scientology protest in Clearwater today. Not many people know, but this is where the founder of the “church” L. Ron. Hubbard landed after he led a group of people around the world in search of a treasure that only he knew the location of. Clearwater has become their headquarters.

According to my friend, the majority of the people passing by were in full support of the protesters. Many people seem to be clued in to the destructive aspects of the “religion”. He also told me that he had the pleasure to speak to two individuals, each of which ascribe to a belief systems that could not be farther apart. One was a practicing chaos magician, a man with an impressive amount of knowledge pertaining to the subject. The other was an older Christian evangelist woman. At first my friend was a little hesitant, but she turned out to be very pleasant and agreed that no one should force a religion onto anyone else, not her or the scientologists.

The question is: What’s next?

I don’t know what this is about exactly, but it’s related to the recent Anonymous vs. Scientology. Maybe the London event?

P.S. They fixed the yellow van that Fox News blew up! Holy shit!

This has been developing over the Internet for the past few days. I still take great enjoyment in learning about movements such as this online, days before they appear in the television media. Anonymous as been releasing secret Scientology documents, promoting various videos and insider stories of former Scientology members. If you’re interested in any of these things, simply search google and you’ll find what you’re looking for.

I remember the very first time I used bittorrent. It was 2004 and I was at a prominent university in the USA, which I quit after a few months.

It wasn’t until reflecting upon Steal This Film that I realized how much the acquisition of copyrighted material influenced my life. This is not just because PC games, films, and music brought me countless hours of entertainment. It’s because the time spent searching for ways to download these forms of media exposed me to new information and more importantly, taught me how to find the information/data I seek. Being able to distinguish between fake sites from real sites, being able to find information pertaining to a computer error, the latest news regarding the pharmacology industry or some esoteric literature- I owe my abilities to the hours I spent searching for the latest warez release of a computer game when I was a teenager.

What does this all mean? To paraphrase Douglas Rushkoff: “The Internet is not a information revolution, it is a communications revolution!”

I have yet to see a documentary that expresses this so well as Steal This Film Pt. 2. The first part of the film is pretty good too, but the second part (produced a year later) is in a league of its own. It includes interviews with top intellectuals and academics from around the world and is a MUST see.
