Quitting smoking and dropping tv are the 2 biggest things one can do to regain personal freedom? Quite a statement. I would probably say that not having a job, identifying the ways that environment, parents and peers condition you and numerous others are a tiny bit bigger, but hey.
Then again, if you stop smoking because you smoke through a conditioned response to stress, unease and certain triggers, then stopping smoking may be a good idea in order to further learn about that strand of conditioning, in an attempt to further break it down. But some people enjoy to smoke, some of them even live quite long.
When I moved from category 2 to category 1 I found it wise to stop. It was also surprisingly easy.
Dropping tv is great (unless you drop it on your own foot), if you understand why you are doing it.
As with all things, the underlying understanding is more important than the act – the act gives you the understanding (which is why it may be necessary, but not necessarily important as an end in itself).
