The American administration has apparently begun the process of classifying its weapons arsenal. This also includes denying Russians access to the information, a country with which the United States has long been transparent in that sense.
“The Pentagon is now trying to keep secret numbers of strategic weapons that have never been classified before,” reported an analyst. The events of September 11, 2001, appear to be the primary justification on which the curious new action is based.
A Pentagon spokesman defended the decision, saying that “declassified documents for sensitive U.S. nuclear weapons, in the wrong hands, could be used to harm Americans.” Not everyone agrees. “It’s yet another example of silly secrecy,” said one.
